As house prices continue to rise, more homeowners are deciding to stay in their current homes and updating them to suit their current needs. According to house-improvements.com, the top 10 renovations to improve your home’s value are:

  1. Install new kitchen cabinets
  2. Change kitchen countertops
  3. Bathroom renovations
  4. Replace windows and doors
  5. Develop or redo a basement
  6. Build a deck or patio
  7. Landscaping
  8. Install new aluminum soffit and fascia
  9. Install vinyl siding
  10. A fresh coat of paint

If you are planning to renovate your home, it is important to notify your insurance company about your plans before the work begins, as some renovations may not be covered under your policy, or in some cases, restrictions may apply.  This is especially true if you plan to move out of your home during the renovations.

Since most renovations will increase the value of your home, your insurance company will also want to determine if your coverage needs to be increased.

If you plan to hire a contractor to perform the work, make sure they have insurance coverage in the event that something goes wrong. Ask to see a certificate of insurance and ask them to confirm they will be requesting all of the appropriate building permits.
